NEWS RELEASE FROM
COMUNN EACHDRAIDH NA PAIRC
(PAIRC HISTORICAL SOCIETY)
ALL WELCOME FOR ANGUS MACLEOD LECTURE AS ARRANGEMENTS CONFIRMED
The prestigious Angus Macleod Memorial Lecture will this year return to its traditional venue at Pairc School, Gravir, South Lochs, it has been confirmed. The lecture, the 19th in the series, will be given at 7.30pm on Friday 28th October, by Dolina Maclennan, the nationally celebrated and award-winning actress, singer, and story-teller, originally from Marvig, South Lochs.
Dolina’s lecture, to be given mainly in English, is entitled Buaidh Bàrdachd (The Power of Poetry), in which she will reflect on the ‘wealth of knowledge and awareness garnered from lasting friendships with a great many of the later 20th century poets, bards and singers of ballads in Scotland’.
To complement the lecture, a new illustrated publication Orain Mhurdani Mast (Songs of Murdani Mast) will be launched at the event. This ‘songbook’ contains many of the Gaelic compositions of the well-known local bard, the late Murdani ‘Mast’ Kennedy of Marvig, and will be the first time his songs have been collected together.
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of Dolina during a discussion session, and Seonaidh Beag Macmillan of ‘The Lochies’ fame will sing during the evening. The event will be rounded off as is customary with a Gaelic psalm.
As regular attendees of the lecture will know, the annual lecture is an opportunity to mark the life and work of the late Angus ‘Ease’ Macleod of Calbost, South Lochs, Lewis, by considering important subjects of wide public interest. It is also a great social occasion, and we expect this year’s event to attract a large audience.
Places can be booked by contacting John Randall by email john673randall@btinternet.com or phone 01851 880365.
Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and those planning to attend are advised to book as soon as possible. Attendance is free, and refreshments will be available after the lecture.
